Government disinformation isn’t new. And the rise of social media and alternative news sources, has made it increasingly difficult for governments or other powerful entities to control the narrative.
COVID-19 served as a catalyst for people to wake up to the manipulation, misinformation, and hidden agendas that have been in play for years, and many questions about trust in government institutions have come to the forefront.
Government Disinformation: A Long History
The deliberate spreading of false or misleading information (propaganda) has been used throughout history by governments, corporations, and other entities to manipulate public opinion, maintain control, or push a particular agenda. Some historical examples:
1. During the Cold War, both the U.S. and the USSR used disinformation as a tool to control public perception. This was done through the media, both domestic and international. CIA operations like Operation Mockingbird (in which journalists were secretly recruited to spread U.S. government-approved narratives) show how much influence governments had over information.
2. Corporations have historically shaped narratives by controlling media outlets. Companies or industries with massive wealth (such as the oil, pharmaceutical, and military-industrial complex) use media to hide the truth, manipulate public opinion, and push their economic interests.
3. There’s a history of false flag operations (where governments stage incidents to justify political or military action) and other covert actions intended to manipulate public perception. Examples include the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was used to justify U.S. involvement in Vietnam, and the Iraq War where misleading intelligence about weapons of mass destruction was used to justify military intervention.
COVID-19 Exposed Government Disinformation
The COVID-19 pandemic became a pivotal moment in the global awareness of disinformation. Here’s why:
1. Government Messaging:
Governments worldwide were under extreme pressure to orchestrate the pandemic and public health crisis… And many inconsistencies in their messaging led to distrust… Contradictory public health guidelines (mask-wearing, lockdowns, vaccine efficacy). This inconsistency in government and media messaging sparked frustration and suspicion among the public, and many started questioning the official narrative.
2. Big Pharma and the Vaccine Narrative:
The pharmaceutical industry and its relationship with governments has always been a point of contention. Yet COVID-19 vaccines took it to another level. People questioned the speed with which the vaccines were developed. There was much debate over their safety and efficacy… Even financial ties between pharmaceutical companies and governments led many to question motives.
There was also concern about corporate control over vaccine distribution and the use of AI and data in vaccine rollouts. The narrative about vaccine safety and mandates became a major political flashpoint, leading to significant division in public opinion.
3. Censorship and Information Suppression:
The censorship of alternative viewpoints during the pandemic opened the floodgates for widespread discussions about free speech and government control. People raising concerns about government policies, or questioned the official narrative, many were silenced or labeled as conspiracy theorists. There was a concerted effort to control the narrative and suppress dissenting voices—whether about lockdowns, masks, vaccines, or the origin of the virus.
4. Alternative Media:
The rise of alternative media platforms questioning the mainstream narrative… Saw misinformation from all sides leading to a huge shift in the way people consume news. Many began to trust alternative and independent news outlets, to counter mainstream media’s coverage. And the realization that we’re being manipulated or controlled by traditional sources of information.
5. A Shift in Public Perception:
Many people began to connect the dots between government control, corporate interests, and the manipulation of public opinion. And people became aware of the danger of state-sponsored propaganda and started questioning the legitimacy of official narratives.
Long-Standing Distrust of Government
These concerns are part of a larger and ongoing pattern of distrust in governments, corporations, and institutions. And people are now more aware than ever of how those in power can manipulate information for their own interests.
• Big Pharma and Big Tech: The power of corporations has been growing for decades influencing government bodies, putting profit before people.
• Centralization of Power: The more centralised the flow of information, the more easily it can be controlled. As we’ve seen with media conglomerates, AI-powered news, and social media algorithms… There’s an increasing concentration of control over what information people are exposed to. This growing control over free speech shows how governments and corporations are wanting to manipulate and steer public perception.
What’s Next?
The pandemic was a wake-up call, that’s deepened the divide between those who trust official sources and those who see the system as rigged or manipulated. With the increasing centralisation of power, surveillance technologies, and AI, people are seeing loss of freedom and access to truth, controlled by a few elites.
The fact that we’re being manipulated or controlled is deeply unsettling. It shakes the foundation of trust in systems that are supposed to serve us. The awareness that disinformation has been used on a global scale empowers us to question and demand more accountability. It’s up to us to build a world where the truth is protected, and power is decentralised.
